I know many of you reading this may be finding a way to keep hair on your head. Even though my suggestion is to shave it off, I believe it is important to talk about what balding men, and women, are using to try and keep their hair. One of the current trends right now in the market is scalp micro pigmentation.
When Did This Start?
Scalp micropigmentation, aka SMP, has been around since the 70’s but didn’t become popular until the early 2000’s
What is it?
SMP is a process that uses tiny microneedles to tattoo pigment into the scalp. These needles and ink replicate the appearance of natural pigments on a balding head. This then creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles with the intent to restore the look of a full head of hair. The goal of the procedure is to add density to your hair by replicating hair follicles in the thinning areas on your scalp.
How it Works
Before your first treatment, you’ll meet with a practitioner who will discuss how the treatment works. This consultation will allow you to explain where you think you need pigmentation and gives the practitioner a chance to explain how everything will work. The treatments start with microneedles that are used to implement pigment dots on your head, which look like little tattoos. Then, a scab heals and eventually vanishes, taking some of the pigment with it. The pigments can also fade due to the immune system attacking them. This is why it is important to go to several treatment sessions to ensure the pigment stays on the scalp.
Cost
Treatment costs can very heavily on what you need. If you’re looking to get scar treatment for your scalp, it will be anywhere from $1200-$2250. However, if you are suffering from severe alopecia, the prices jump up and range from $3750-$6000. The cost of SMP is expensive, so it is vital that you consult a practitioner before moving forward with the treatments.
Side Effects
Like most hair loss treatments or procedures, SMP can have side effects. In intense scenarios, your scalp can become very irritated resulting in itchiness and on or around the area where the treatment was focused. Some other side effects, which are more internal, are your thoughts on what others think. Sometimes after receiving this treatment, individuals may not believe in the authenticity of their artificial hair. This can lead to a severe lack of confidence and a sense of panic because the procedure is irreversible.
While the idea of making your hair look denser or fuller is nice, I think it’s important to way the pros and cons. The pros of SMP is a possibility of making your hair look denser and fuller. The downside, however, is that it’s expensive, it may not look great, and it could take a shot at your confidence. My suggestion would be just to shave your head. It’s going to save you a lot of time and money and could really enhance other aspects of your life.
